Successful Inspire Innovation Workshop Held For Southern Nevada Teachers

On April 21 our Section hosted Mr. Bill Nott and Ms. Karen Malesky at our first Inspire Innovation Workshop at the Southwest Career and Technical Center.  The audience was filled with teachers from Las Vegas area schools.  They were brought together to collaborate with engineers in order to learn about hands-on engineering design with applications for their math, science and social studies classrooms.  The event was well attended with about 15 teachers and 15 engineers.

This month’s Spotlight: Wisdom at Your Fingertips

April 2012

“I am proud to be a member of ASME because the society provides a wealth of knowledge and opportunities for professional growth in every field of the engineering and scientific world. It gives us the opportunity to explore modern tools that were not available when we, the wiser/mature guys and girls, graduated university, allowing us to re-map our dreams and careers to modern, actual goals.” — Iris Florea, ASME Member since 1997

Dear Members,

I don’t know about you, but the older I get the more I want to know.  Every day I find myself asking questions about an increasing variety of subjects, and I feel fortunate that I have the internet to help with the answers. Sometimes I wonder if the internet is the impetus for my intellectual curiosity, or just the tool that lets me satisfy my need to learn more.  It’s a bit like the age old chicken and egg question, so I suppose I’ll never really know that answer!

If you share my desire for knowledge transfer and continuous learning, ASME is a virtual treasure trove of technical information – and we stand at the ready to pass along this wisdom to our members and the global mechanical engineering community.  ASME provides a multitude of webinars, podcasts, online courses and other on-demand learning opportunities for our members – many of which are available at no cost. Here are just a few of our free upcoming programs and resources (click each headline to learn more):

Emerging Technology Webinars. Each month, ASME delivers a free webinar on a different emerging technology topic. The next webinar is on April 3rd titled “Energy-Water Nexus of Transportation”.—webinar

Nanotechnology Education Series. ASME’s highly popular nanotechnology education series of podcasts are available for download anytime, 24/7.

Standards and Certification Courses. Interested in learning more about the standards and certification process?  ASME offers a free self-study Assessment Based Course which is designed to be taken at your convenience, whenever your schedule allows.

Mechanical Engineering magazine webinars. Moderated by Editor-in-Chief John Falcioni, ME magazine hosts a series of live webinars on a variety of subjects. The recently conducted March 2012 webinar “Conjugating Heat Transfer Simulations” is available for download for the next 90 days.

Embedded ASME Podcasts. features free embedded podcasts that you can listen to directly from the web – no need to download!  This month’s feature is from the bioengineering field and is titled “Using Microfluidics to Diagnose HIV.”—articles/media/2012/03/podcast-microfluidics-health-hiv-diagnostic-device
