Silver State ASME would like to congratulate UNLV’s 2013 Solar Decathlon Team for placing 2nd overall, 1st in market appeal, 2nd in communication and 3rd for engineering. The Solar Decathlon is a competition that was held the beginning of October 2013 in Irvine, CA that is sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy.
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 is an international competition with the goal of educating the public about energy-saving residential designs. In this award-winning program, twenty collegiate teams need to design, build, and maintain sustainable solar-powered houses.
The project, DesertSol, takes advantage of the Mojave Desert’s renewable resources to produce a sustainable home that is self-reliant in the severe desert climates. This project incorporates solar energy as the primary fuel source with many other hi-tech and green solutions in a beautiful package.
Please join us in congratulating the efforts of UNLV and their award winning project DESERTSOL!
Silver State ASME Executive Chair, Bill Bruninga, recently attended our District Leadership Meeting in Portland, OR with staff from ASME headquarters. This meeting was to update our group on administrative and financial changes across ASME which affect our section. These changes will affect the method in which we bank and file tax documents with our ASME non-profit tax-exempt status. Not every section had a representative in attendance, but Silver State ASME has kept it a priority to attend this meeting two to three times a year.
If you have any questions regarding your sections involvement, contributions or how to get involved yourself please direct your questions to any member of on our leadership page.
On August 3 we had a great time visiting and checking on the progress of “Desert Sol” from UNLV’s Solar Decathlon Team. The net-zero energy house was looking fantastic and appears to be right on schedule for the August 30, 2013 send off. For those of you that couldn’t make the BBQ, The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 is an international competition with the goal of educating the public about energy-saving residential designs. In this award-winning program, twenty collegiate teams need to design, build, and maintain sustainable solar-powered houses.
Our ASME Silver State Chapter met with students and workers to congratulate them on their hard work with BBQ and beverages. It was an exciting time for our members to see future graduates of many different degree programs at UNLV working together and some getting involved outside of their specific majors to make construction happen.
If you couldn’t make the BBQ don’t worry! You still have a chance to check out the final product of “Desert Sol” at the August 30 competition send off. It’s as simple as adding it to your calendar from OUR calendar on OUR Homepage
ASME BBQ For UNLV Solar Decathlon Team – Aug 3 – 11AM
Come see the amazing progress that the UNLV Solar Decathlon Team has made on their contest entry,a 750 ft2 home. In this case, their contest entry is a net-zero energy house that is nearing completion and will be shipped to California for the October DOE sponsored 2013 Solar Decathlon.
We would like to support the team by feeding them during the last stretch of their build. So, we would invite you to help us cook some food, feed thestudents, see UNLV’s entry, and wish the team good luck in the competition. As far as needs, we will need volunteers to bring side dishes, desserts,
chairs, and shade tents. We will also likely need an extra BBQ grill.
We hope you can join with us to show our support of the huge effort that these students have put into this contest!

University of Nevada at Las Vegas has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy to be one of 5 Regional Test Center sites that will work to make solar energy more affordable and reliable through the development of nationwide standards in the photovoltaic (PV) industry. The Nevada site will accommodate as many as 8 different systems and support a total capacity of 250kW DC. This collaborative project will include the efforts of UNLV’s Center for Energy Research with oversight from Sandia Labs on a Las Vegas Valley Water District site of 4 acres at Elkhorn Reservoir in Las Vegas.
For one of ASME’s E-Week Presentations, our chapter’s engineering students were given the opportunity to speak with practicing professional engineers and students. A treat for our students, a Las Vegas pump engineering company Nikkiso Cryo and UNLV Student Praveen Raj each gave presentations at the Northwest Career Technical Academy.
