7th Annual ASME Silver State Awards Dinner 7-12-2013 Gordon Biersch
Each year, the Southern Nevada Mechanical Engineering Achievement Award is presented to a company, organization, or individual who has contributed to the advancement of the mechanical engineering profession in Southern Nevada. This year we recognize Dr. Robert Boehm for his long-term research and focus on solar energy which has culminated in UNLV being recognized as one of five regional DOE solar test centers.
Dr. Boehm will also be our keynote speaker discussing UNLV’s Center for Energy Research, their recent NSF grant and DOE recognition as a Regional Test Center. Continue reading

Meet us for a tour of CE Tooling‘s facilities at 5pm on May 31 (2560 W. Brooks Ave., North Las Vegas). Immediately afterward we will be treating you to pizza, appetizers, and the first drink at Big Dog’s Draft House (4543 North Rancho Drive, Las Vegas, 702-645-1404). Please bring a guest.
CE Tooling is a hidden treasure of high-tech manufacturing located right here in the Las Vegas Valley. They make tools and accessories for other industrial manufacturer’s around the world. This tour will be a great way to gain new insight into several metal working operations you have probably never seen in person. The highlight of the tour will probably be their Wire and Sinker EDM machines – very cool tech. Of course they also have one of the largest machine shops in Nevada to go along with their numerous EDM’s.
RSVP is not required, but please send a message to Bill Bruninga (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you intend to attend to help us get a general head count. Guests are welcome and encouraged.
– Another exciting event here in Southern Nevada brought to you by the ASME Silver State Section.
May 2-4, 2012 | Planet Hollywood Resort | Las Vegas, Nevada
The first large-scale symposium dedicated entirely to verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification of computer simulations is being held May 2-4 in Las Vegas. This symposium will bring together engineers and scientists from all disciplines that use computational modeling and simulation to discuss and exchange ideas and methods for verification of codes and solutions, simulation validation, and assessment of uncertainties in mathematical models, computational solutions, and experimental data. The call-for-abstracts resulted in an outstanding response with over 240 abstracts received from a wide variety of industries throughout the world and we are excited for the attendees opportunity to share and learn verification and validation methods, approaches, and ideas for the future. The conference program will begin with two plenary sessions with four distinguished experts, followed by four parallel technical tracks, and will conclude with a regulatory perspective panel session and open discussion for future activities and works.
A group of ASME members and their spouses spent the evening of December 9th at the The Toys for Tots fundraiser banquet at the Bellagio with other local affiliations. There were over six-hundred guests. Thank you to the Stockinger’s, the Colton’s, The Trabia’s, The Bruninga’s, and the Scott’s for representing ASME at this prestigious event. We look forward to bringing a larger contingent at next year’s event.
On September 30, 2011 our members had the opportunity to tour the Bureau of Reclamation’s new building in Boulder City, Nevada. At approximately 50,000 gross sq. ft. for around 170 staff, the building will achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification, the highest level attainable and the third DOI project to reach this standard.
The $17.3 million design-build project, funded by the 2010 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), included planning, regulatory compliance, contracting, design, construction, and construction management for the building, site improvements, and solar field.
Features include 38% less gross energy consumption than a typical office building as well as using reclaimed water from the cooling towers at the central chiller plant to flush toilets. We’ll see many more features during the tour, including how this new efficient building maintained historic appearance requirements.
The photovoltaic solar panel farm is estimated to produce 240 MWh per year, around half the annual building energy use.
When: November 10, 2011, 6:30pm
Where: To Be Announced
