On Friday, May 29th the Silver State ASME Chapter was given a tour of the UNLV R&D Facilities. The tour showed the great strides UNLV has made since the completed construction of the new Science and Engineering Building. The tour started with a pre social where refreshements were served. A presentation was given on many of the research projects that are currently being undertaken by the faculty and staff at UNLV. Current research that is ongoing at UNLV includes topics in solar energy, homeland security issues and technology, nano fabrication, materials testing and characterization, nuclear fuel cycle topics, vibration isolation/sound dampening, large scale computing and many others.
The tour concluded with a demonstration of the solar thermal system that has been used to generate usable electricity. The system tracks the movement of the sun and uses reflective surfaces to concetrate the suns energy onto a surface for conversion to electricity.
